Book Description
A poacher shoots; a bear charges; a father and his child are left wounded and stranded. A vast search and rescue operation is mounted. Zita Benetton, the mayor of the alpine town, Pianalto, who is balancing a hectic political career with raising her fifteen-year-old daughter alone, now sees her life disrupted as the town revolts and calls for the bears to be killed and for the government to review its policy on the protection of the species. Pressure on Zita mounts as the leader of her own political party warns her to back the wishes of citizens or she will lose his endorsement. Meanwhile, in the nearby peaks, a bear and her three cubs are on the run.

Durante un'escursione in montagna, Roberto e suo figlio Danilo si imbattono in un'orsa con i suoi cuccioli. Un bracconiere spara e l'orsa carica causando la caduta in un precipizio di padre e figlio. Mentre la cittadina discute del suo destino, l'orsa è in fuga con i cuccioli sui monti vicini.
