Set in Tuscany, The Odd One follows Brianna, a young mixed-race veterinarian haunted by the violent death of her mother and struggling to overcome deep fear of men and criminals. After repeated experiences of racism prevent her from finding work, she accepts an internship at a rural veterinary clinic in Volterra—only to discover that part of the job involves caring for dogs inside a prison shelter run by inmates.

There she meets Zamir, an Albanian prisoner serving a life sentence for killing a man. When an injured stray dog dies after giving birth to five puppies, Zamir becomes their caretaker, and Brianna reluctantly begins working alongside him. Her assumptions about prisoners—and about danger itself—gradually begin to unravel.

The situation becomes more complicated when one of the puppies is suspected to be a wolf cub, placing both the animal and Zamir at risk in a region hostile to wolves. As Brianna and Zamir bond through their shared care for vulnerable animals, the novel explores trauma, prejudice, prison rehabilitation, and racism.

Blending literary fiction with emotional suspense and animal-centred storytelling, The Odd One is ultimately a story about redemption, trust, and the unexpected ways wounded beings can heal one another.
